Web Masters Notes and Rivers tips for browsing
Refresh - Important !
It is important to stress the use of the Refresh Button / Icon whilst visiting our page in the product
sections and in any subsequent visits. With the turnover of product we have, sometimes the site is
updated 3 or 4 times per week with the latest data and ongoing new clearance product. However quite a
few ISP's are using proxy servers to cache web pages in order to speed up browsing for their clients,
and your own browser may do the same. Thus many people who bookmark a particular page for example
"Mens Long Sleeve Shirts" return to the page and pull up a "cached" version which
is resident in their ISP's proxy server or their own computer.
This "cached" version of the page can contain incorrect or obsolete information, so needs to be updated by hitting
the "Refresh" button (or "Reload" button on Netscape browsers). This will save you
the hassle of filling in the form and faxing it through and then being told that the product you
ordered is out of stock.
No Caching
Some of you web junkies may question why we don't enable the "No Cache" meta tag in the source
code. With the pages being as graphics intensive as they are with pictures of our product, this would
increase the download times if you were just browsing back and forth through the site. We took the lesser
of two evils and decided that you should refresh on subsequent visits to the page instead. Some of our
pages run a special sort of script which means that you cannot look at the page offline - ie: it's not
cached. A perfect example of this is the "Comments Enquiries & Feedback" page. This has
been done so that you are able to get the latest version of the page at any time and observe the comments
of the Rivers Customer Feedback Guru who often replies within 24 hours of a message being posted.
Web Standards

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an international consortium where Member organizations, a full-time staff,
and the public work together to develop Web standards. W3C's mission is:
"To lead the World Wide Web to its full potential by developing
protocols and guidelines that ensure long-term growth for the Web."
Although not all of our site is W3C HTML 4.01 compliant, the process from the front page, through to online
ordering is W3C HTML 4.01 compliant. We are planning to ensure that the entire site is compliant in the near future.
Screen Font Setting - Important !
Our pages will be best viewed when your screen font setting is set to "small fonts". If it is
set as "large fonts" the layout of the pages may fall well short of satisfaction.
Browser?
This webpage can be viewed using any of the major commercial browsers like Netscape Navigator, Mozilla Firefox and
Microsoft Internet Explorer. However by utilizing JavaScript, Cascade Style Sheet and ASP, our web site
is best viewed with
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and above,
and/or
Mozilla Firefox 1.0 and above.
Visitors with lower version browsers may miss some functions, but still be able to browse every
page.
Other Screen Resolutions?
The 3 major resolutions in use - 640x480, 800x600 & 1024x768 are catered for with
autocentering of tables and pictures on each of the pages. However resizing of these pictures
on the product pages to match particular resolutions has been left out to assist in download
times - we still recognise there are some "slow" modems out there!
